June 19 - Innovation and Opportunities on the Waterfront

Waterfront Innovation Zone

Join us on June 19 to learn more about the new focal point for innovation in the local economy. A new innovation center on the waterfront is scheduled to open in September. We have invited representatives from the Port of Bellingham, Western Washington University and Bellingham Technical College for an informal panel discussion around this new public-private partnership whose goal is to foster the development of emerging technologies, new companies and jobs.

The Bellingham Waterfront District has been chosen as one of 11 state Innovation Partnership Zones, and was one of just five to receive $1 million to jump-start development activities.  The goal of the IPZ is to create lab-to-market economic development programs that will become globally recognized as hubs of expertise, innovation and commercialization. A section of the former Georgia-Pacific tissue warehouse is being turned into a specialized research, development and training area for the IPZ and is expected to be completed in July.

WWU's representative will talk about the Engineering Technology project with Bellingham’s All American Marine, developing a lightweight hydrofoil for future passenger ferry use. And a representative from Bellingham Technical College, another educational partner of the center, is slated to talk about the new electro-mechanical lab and technical trades training.

TAG completes R&D survey and directory

TAG recently completed a project to map research and development activities in sciences and technology in Whatcom County. The Port of Bellingham engaged TAG to survey researchers, faculty and associates at local colleges and private industry. In addition to identify areas of expertise in R&D TAG also looked to identify interest levels in collaborating on projects with industry.
You can access the complete report and directory in PDF format here>>

The R&D Directory will serve as one tool to link businesses and entrepreneurs with our local researchers and technical resources.

TAG recently wrote an article that highlights our survey findings and talks about the opportunities to leverage our local R&D resources which was published in the June issue of the Bellingham Business Journal. You can read it here>>
